What’s the Difference Between a Necklace and a Pendant?

Written By Allie Perry August 16, 2024

Two popular types of jewelry that frequently get confused are necklaces and pendants. You may be thinking to yourself, “Aren’t they the same thing?” The answer is no! They have distinct features that set them apart, and understanding the differences can help you make an informed decision about which piece is right for you.

What Is a Necklace?

In what will be a surprise to no one, a necklace is a piece of jewelry worn around the neck. (Who names these things) It typically consists of a chain, cord, or string that may or may not have additional elements like gemstones, beads, or other decorative items. The defining characteristic of a necklace is that its centerpiece, if it has one, is usually permanently attached to the chain.

Key Characteristics:

  • Permanent Centerpiece: The decorative element, such as a gemstone or charm, is permanently attached to the chain. This centerpiece is often the focal point of the necklace.
  • Variety of Styles: Necklaces come in many styles, including chokers, chains, beaded necklaces, and statement pieces. Each style offers a different look and feel.
  • Material: Necklaces can be made from various materials, including gold, silver, platinum, or even fabric and leather.

What Is a Pendant?

A pendant, on the other hand, is a separate, detachable piece of jewelry that hangs from a chain or cord. The key feature of a pendant is the bail, a small loop or ring that allows the pendant to be easily attached to or removed from a chain.

Key Characteristics:

  • Detachable: The pendant can be attached to any compatible chain or cord. This allows for greater versatility, as you can mix and match pendants with different chains.
  • Bail: The bail is the part that connects the pendant to the chain. It can be simple or decorative, and its size and shape will determine how the pendant hangs.
  • Personalization: Pendants offer more opportunities for personalization, as you can change the chain or even wear multiple pendants together.

What's better- a necklace or a pendant?

Necklace Pros:

  • Cohesive Design: Necklaces are often designed as a single piece, ensuring that the chain and centerpiece complement each other perfectly.
  • Durability: Since the centerpiece is permanently attached, there's less risk of it getting lost or damaged.
  • Less Maintenance: There's no need to worry about switching out pendants or finding a matching chain.
  • Aesthetics: You never have to worry about the clasp sliding around to the front.

Necklace Cons:

  • Less Versatility: You're limited to the design of the necklace as a whole, with no option to change the centerpiece.
  • Fixed Length: The chain length is often fixed, so it may not be adjustable to suit different outfits or occasions.
  • Aesthetics: Sometimes the centerpiece of a necklace will get off center, particularly if your skin is tacky at all from lotion or perspiration.

Pendant Pros:

  • Versatility: You can easily switch out the pendant or change the chain to suit your style or outfit.
  • Customization: Pendants allow for greater personalization, making them ideal for those who like to change their look frequently.
  • Gift-Friendly: Pendants make great gifts, as they can be added to an existing chain or worn on a new one.
  • Chains: You can have one or two chains that are interchangeable with a multitude of pendants.

Pendant Cons:

  • Risk of Loss: Since pendants are detachable, there’s a higher risk of losing them if the bail or clasp is not secure.
  • Maintenance: You'll need to ensure that the pendant's bail is compatible with the chain, and it will need to be checked to make sure it’s not wearing out with daily wear
  • Potential Mismatch: Not all pendants and chains are created equal, so finding a combination that works well together can be challenging.
  • Aesthetics: Sometimes the clasp slides around to the front.

Things to Consider When Buying

  1. Purpose: Consider the occasion or purpose of the jewelry. If you’re looking for something versatile that you can mix and match, a pendant might be the better choice. For a more cohesive and polished look, a necklace could be the way to go.
  2. Chain Length: Think about the length of the chain. Necklaces often come in fixed lengths, while pendants can be paired with chains of various lengths, offering more flexibility.
  3. Material: Ensure the materials of the pendant and chain complement each other. For example, a gold pendant might look best on a gold chain, but color isn’t the only thing to consider- it’s also important to consider the proportions of both pieces.
  4. Durability: If you’re concerned about durability, especially if you lead an active lifestyle, a necklace with a permanently attached centerpiece might be more secure.
  5. Style Preferences: Consider your personal style. If you enjoy switching up your jewelry to match your outfits or mood, pendants offer the flexibility you need.
  6. Budget: Finally, think about your budget. Necklaces with intricate designs or precious gemstones can be more expensive, while pendants can be a more affordable option that still offers plenty of style.

Necklaces and pendants are both great jewelry options. You may prefer one over the other, especially for specific occasions, but there’s no wrong answer! Keep both in your collection!
