What's the Birthstone for August?
Written By Allie Perry August 2, 2024
If August was a color, it might be the bright yellow of the hot summer sun or the cool blue of the sky where it touches the horizon. But it might also be the golden green of lush grass, a thriving pollinator garden, and its very own birthstone, the peridot.
Peridot is relatively abundant compared to other gemstones, making it really accessible and affordable for a wide range of budgets. Major sources of peridot include the United States (particularly Arizona), Myanmar, Pakistan, and China. Arizona peridot is especially notable for its lighter, yellowish-green color, while stones from Myanmar and Pakistan are often deeper green and more prized. Peridot is perfect for you if you want a bright green stone without a huge price tag.
Varieties of Peridot
Peridot is a variety of the mineral olivine and is prized for its distinct olive-green color, which can range from a yellow-green to a deeper, more intense green. The gem quality of peridot is determined by its clarity and color, with the most sought-after stones exhibiting a pure, rich green without any brown or yellow tints.
- Standard Peridot: The most common type, often found in volcanic rocks. Its color can vary but typically presents as a light green with a hint of yellow.
- Burmese Peridot: Sourced from Myanmar, these stones are renowned for their exceptional clarity and a deep, rich green color that is highly valued.
- Kashmir Peridot: Known for its unique, almost glowing green hue, these stones are rare and considered very high quality.
- Arizona Peridot: Often lighter and more yellowish in color, Arizona peridot is abundant and widely available.
The Symbolism of Peridot
Like many other colored stones, peridot carries its own symbolism and historical significance. Often referred to as the "Evening Emerald" due to its ability to remain bright and vibrant even in low light, this gemstone has been associated with a variety of meanings and powers:
- Healing: In ancient times, peridot was believed to have protective qualities, warding off evil spirits and nightmares. It was also thought to promote healing and bring good health to its wearer.
- Prosperity and Growth: The green color of peridot is reminiscent of growth and renewal, making it a symbol of prosperity and abundance.
- Positive Energy: Peridot is said to bring positive energy, enhance confidence, and reduce stress. It is also thought to stimulate the mind and open new avenues of thought.
How to Care for Peridot
To keep your peridot jewelry looking its best, it's important to follow some specific care guidelines. Peridot is relatively soft compared to other gemstones, with a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, meaning it can be scratched more easily.
- Cleaning: Clean your peridot jewelry with warm, soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners, as these can damage the stone.
- Storage: Store peridot jewelry separately from other pieces to prevent scratches. A soft cloth pouch or a lined jewelry box is ideal.
- Wearing: While peridot is suitable for everyday wear, it's best to remove peridot rings and bracelets when doing activities that could expose the gem to knocks and scratches, such as gardening or sports.
Peridot, with its captivating green hue and rich symbolism, is a perfect birthstone for August. Whether set in rings, necklaces, or earrings, this bright gem will definitely perk up your jewelry collection!
