⚡️ Lightning bug or 🔥 firefly?
Written By Allie Perry July 4, 2025
My husband and I have been debating something lately.
You know those little bugs with glowing butts that drift around your backyard in the summer?
What do you call them?
I grew up calling them lightning bugs.
If you ever hear me say Firefly, I'm most likely referring to one of my favorite TV shows ever, the shiny Joss Whedon space Western that ran for just one season in 2002.
Rip Firefly, you were gone too soon.
But I digress.
Maybe lightning bugs vs fireflies is a regional thing.
Maybe it's a nostalgia thing.
Either way, they remind us of carefree summer nights when we chased magic to collect in jars.
Funny bugs that could blink on and off.
Graceful butterflies floating between flowers.
Armored insects that would roll into a ball like a Transformer when under threat. (I grew up calling those roly-poly bugs, but that's a separate debate entirely.)
Beautiful, creepy-crawly, and everything in between, they were part of summer.
That's why I made tiny tributes to them: handcrafted bug jewelry you can collect, no jar required. Each piece in the Critters Collection is a nod to those backyard memories.
